Today, close to 5,000 residents call UniverCity at SFU home. This is an award-winning community, which offers a full range of stores and services, including but not limited to Scotiabank, restaurants and cafes, and a BC Liquor Store.
In 1963, when architects Arthur Erickson and Geoff Massey first submitted their plan for the Simon Fraser University, their objective was for it to anchor a residential community atop Burnaby Mountain. Once fully completed, UniverCity is expected to house up to 10,000 residents. One of SFU’s main objectives when developing a residential community: to create a more “complete community” with a wide range of housing choices, shops, services and amenities.
Like any good residential community, UniverCity provides access to a number of parks and green spaces, and a community garden. Richard Bolton Park is in the heart of the community, right where the West and East Highlands meet. It has a children’s playground, benches and 2.7 acres of green space. There is also easy access to the City of Burnaby Trails, a network of 26 multi-use trails, perfect for walking, jogging or cycling, even for dog-walking.
In regards to education, the community is also home to the University Highlands Elementary School, which opened its doors in 2010. There is space for 40 kindergarten and 275 elementary students. For young families, UniverCity’s SFU Childcare Society has fifteen programs offering high quality childcare services.
The UniverCity community is made up of four distinct neighbourhoods: West Highlands, East Highlands, the Slopes and the High Street.
Nestled among the trees and trails of Burnaby Mountain, West Highlands offers the convenience of nearby University High Street shops and services, transit, and proximity to SFU campus. This neighbourhood features Highland House and Altitude, UniverCity’s newest condo residence. It is also home to the Childcare Centre.
East Highland, the first neighbourhood developed at UniverCity, is on the east side of the mountain. It was designed with three objectives in mind: beauty, accessibility, and convenience. All residences are an easy walking distance from SFU, transit and University High Street. Housing options in East Highlands include One University Crescent and Verdant@UniverCity. The aim is to provide high-quality, energy-efficient housing at below market prices. Verdant provides a wide range of condos and townhouses.
University High Street is where the excitement is. It houses a bustling public plaza with convenient access to shopping, restaurants and services. It contains over 25 local stores with everything from Nesters Market Grocery Store to Scotiabank, Subway, coffee shops, restaurants, a dental office, a pharmacy, and a hair stylist, to name a few.
The South Slopes is designed as a terraced hillside community. It mainly consists of low-rise homes for families. The design, which is terraced and follows the slope of the hill, takes full advantage of the views. This neighbourhood is also a great home for outdoor lovers, since it is adjacent to many green spaces, like the Slopes Neighbourhood Park to the Burnaby Mountain Conservation area, there are many hectares seconds away from the residents’ doorsteps.
