Right on Canada’s border with the USA and roughly 30 km (18.6 mi) south-east of Vancouver you will find the city of Surrey. Surrey is one of Canada’s fastest growing cities and also recognized as a culturally diverse city. Part of this growth is Surrey’s north-western neighborhood, Whalley, and especially the City Centre or Downtown.
Once upon a time Whalley used to be known as the most dangerous part of Surrey but with the residential and commercial development that took place in the last couple of years this reputation has definitely changed. The City Centre has become more pedestrian-friendly with smaller blocks and fine-grained walkways.
The infrastructure is also keeping up with the new development. The City Centre contains 3 of the 4 stops of the Skytrain that connects Surrey to Vancouver. It will take you about 40 minutes to get from the most southern stop in the Whalley City Centre to the most northern point at the Vancouver Waterfront and about 4 minutes to get from one end of the centre to the other. With more stops and links planned for the Skytrain in Surrey it is sure to cater to the future of a growing city and its inhabitants.
Whalley Downton has its own Central City Shopping Mall with over 140 stores to provide people in the centre with all they could possibly need, but the bigger Guildford Town Centre Mall is a couple of blocks over in the Guildford neighborhood should you need more. Despite all the recent development and the buzz of a city centre, quiet spots can still be found. Holland Park is just opposite the Central City Shopping Mall. These 10 hectares of greenery provides visitors with sports fields, numerous picnic areas and some peace and quiet in the middle of the city. It also serves as a gathering point for locals as it plays host to various artistic performances in its amphitheatre.
During its development Whalley’s city centre also catered to the artistic side of Surrey with amenities like the City Centre Library as well as Centre Stage – the theatre in City Hall provides accommodation for 200 people to enjoy the performing art shows staged in it. The Surrey Arts Program also brings art into the city for everybody to enjoy and it is clear that during its development the City Centre has not focused on just one aspect while leaving others to lag behind leading to a wonderfully balanced Downtown.
With this in mind it is no surprise that the property market also hasn’t lagged behind and a plethora of residential listings are available for potential buyers to consider, especially if you are looking at condos. With various residential high rise developments buyers can find cozy 300 sf condos to spacious 1300 sf condos within walking distance of 2 Skytrain stops. Beautiful townhouses are also available but less so than condos. But regardless of exactly what type of residence you are interested in potential buyers can choose from new developments or established buildings.
Whalley Downtown is a great mix of urban ease and accessibility while still keeping in touch with its cultural and environmentally conscious side.
