Grandview-Woodlands is a beautiful Vancouver neighborhood to the east of the downtown area and stretches from Burrard Inlet and its busy shores down to Broadway, one of the most important east-west roads. Grandview-Woodlands is best known for its eclectic Commercial drive starts at the edge of Grandview-Woodlands in Powel streets and runs south towards the John Hendry Park the Knight neighborhood. The Drive technically runs through two different neighborhood, Knight and Grandview-Woodlands, but it is almost a little community in and of itself.
Commercial drive is known as the Little Italy of Vancouver and this name is well deserved. Many Italians settled in this area after World War II and today numerous shops and restaurants are distinctly Italian in nature. Visitors can find some of the tastiest pizzas in Vancouver in The Drive’s Italian restaurants. Along with its Italian immigrants came a sizeable Portuguese community and the two cultures are uniquely interwoven with Portuguese culture being represented with restaurants like The Portuguese Club of Vancouver. The area also saw many immigrants from Asia as well as Central and South America from the 1960’s onwards. This mix of cultures, ideas, arts and politics created the perfect breeding ground for the counter-culture demographic that is still present today.
Commercial Drive is more than just food and delis. Beer connoisseurs will be over the moon with the different options open to them – from tasting locally brewed craft beers to visiting the breweries just a stone’s throw away. Many of the stores in The Drive are utterly local in nature and shoppers can buy clothing and arts and crafts from Vancouver artists and craftspeople. The area also holds a number of events throughout the year and it is especially the annual Italian Days and Car Free Day Festival that draw big crowds. The parks dotted along The Drive, notably the John Hendry Park to the south in Knight and Grandview Park almost all the way to the north, provides a number of beautiful green spaces where you can sit and enjoy an impromptu picnic with some of the fresh produce purchased in The Drive.
Access to other neighborhoods from The Drive is effortlessly achieved by the SkyTrain stop situated towards the southern end of Commercial Drive connecting it to the rest of Vancouver by both the Expo and the Millennium line. Bus line 20 also runs straight through Commercial Drive further connecting it to the centre of Vancouver.
If you are looking for property in and around Commercial Drive Grandview-Woodlands is where you will find the majority of listings as most of The Drive runs through this neighborhood. The options to choose from are not many but condos ranging from 430 sf single rooms to luxurious 1690 sf spaces just two blocks to the east of Commercial drive. There are some Townhouse options available but less so than condos but there are some new developments and investors will be able to find something to their liking.
Commercial Drive is a wonderful strip of shops, restaurants, bars and gelato stops. It is especially attractive for those individuals looking for an eclectic area with a rich multi-cultural character.
