One of the liveliest areas in all of Vancouver, West End lies between Burrard Street to the east, Georgia Street to the north, Stanley Park to the west, and English Bay and Burrard Inlet to the south. It is next to the neighbourhoods of Coal Harbour, Yaletown, and the central business and financial districts.
The West End was the first area of Vancouver that could be truly be called downtown. It has been called North America’s densest neighbourhood, but its delimitation make the West End the perfect residential area for both the urban dweller and the nature lover. The area has experienced important demographic changes in the past decades. It went from being made up of mostly single residents to a much more mixed population. This has been thanks to the influx of immigrants from all over the world.
Most of the development in this area took place in the 60s and 70s because the fact that it was close to the drawing downtown was very attractive to settlers. It is an eclectic mix of mid-rise and high-rise titled and rental buildings. In between the buildings are many renovated and converted older homes and low buildings. The Mole Hill area on Beach Avenue is an example of the preserved homes and buildings. Recently, the West End has seen a surge of luxurious high-rise buildings that attract the younger upper middle-class.
One of the great attractive features of the West End is English Bay Beach, at the foot of Denman Street. This is where the Celebration of Light fireworks show is celebrated annually. The area is surrounded by some of downtown Vancouver’s most popular cafes and restaurants. The easy access to Stanley Park and the English Bay Seawall is also a big draw for people who love the outdoors. Stanley Park has walking and running trials, and rugby, tennis, and lawn bowling facilities. Other parks in the neighbourhood include Alexandra Park, Nelson Park, Sunset Beach, and Cardero Park.
There is transportation to any point on the Lower Mainland within walking distance from anywhere in the West End. There is easy access to the transportation services of Skytrain and Canada Line. The downtown core, Rogers Arena and BC Place are also an easy walk away.
The main streets of the West End are Denman Street, Robson Street, and Davie Street. They offer a variety of excellent restaurants and shops. Robson Street, which was known as the Robsonstrasse, is not only home to the most expensive retail shops in Canada, but has lately also become an important tourist stop. The West End also offers its residents amenities such as grocery stores, coffee shops, movie theatres and a library.
The West End is an incredibly diverse area, home to heritage homes and around 40,000 people living in high-rise apartments. Here, older renovated homes and low-rise buildings live side by side with the high-risers that have become more common as the densification of the area increased. The streets are tree-lined and quiet green spaces are an oasis of calm in the hubbub of the neighbourhood.
