False Creek
False Creek is one of the city’s most upcoming waterfront neighbourhoods. It was named after the waterway of False Creek, which separates the downtown area from the rest of Vancouver. It is bordered by West 6th Avenue on the south, the False Creek waterway on the north, Ontario Street on the east and Burrard Street on the west. False Creek is the proud home of some of the most popular Vancouver areas, like Granville Island, Seaforth Armoury, Molson Breweries and Olympic Village.
This area known to be Vancouver’s industrial in the 1950s. In the 1970s, the City Council formalized a transformation plan to transform this site into a mixed use waterfront community. Today, False Creek is a mix commercial, retail and housing buildings. Residential buildings are mostly townhouse style condos. There are almost none single-family or detached dwellings. The neighbourhood caters mostly to baby boomers, young professionals and young families that want to enjoy the waterfront living without being too far from the downtown core.
False Creek is an area with high transit access. The district is serviced by the Coast Mountain Bus and the Canada Line has several nearby stations. There are water ferry services to numerous landing points across the water near downtown. There is also a refurbished interurban Streetcar that runs between Granville Island and Science World in the summer months.
False Creek has some schooling options for all ages. The False Creek Elementary School is within its borders, and Henry Hudson Elementary, Tennyson Elementary and Kitsilano Secondary School are a short distance away. There are also some options in the private school direction.
Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant is a mixture of large detached homes, low-rise buildings and a few condos. With the pressure to allow for greater population density, some of these detached homes have been converted to multi-story buildings, as well as some new higher-end lofts and condos. The neighbourhood has always attracted the artistic community, but recently it has been the choice of young professionals. This contributes to the area’s unique and hip personality.
There are plenty of green spaces in Mount Pleasant, like Tea Swamp Park, Jonathan Rogers Park, China Creek North, Sahalli Park, China Creek South Park and Guelph Park. Mount Pleasant also offers one of its kind community centres in the city: the most popular of them is the Mount Pleasant Community Centre which features a gym, fitness centre, climbing wall, multipurpose rooms and dance studios.
This district has the advantage of being affordable while still enjoying the close proximity to the energy of Downtown. There are also several transportation options, such as several bus lines and Skytrain stations within close range.
In terms of schooling, there are many institutions in and around the area. For example, Lord Strathcona Elementary (one of the oldest schools in Vancouver), Mount Pleasant Elementary, Florence Nightingale Elementary, and Fraser Elementary. For secondary school students, there are several options just outside the neighbourhood borders, such as Sir Charles Tupper Secondary, Templeton Secondary, and Vancouver Technical. There are also three private schools in the immediate area.
