Gastown
Gastown is Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood; we could say that the city started here. The neighbourhood owns its name and start to John “Gassy Jack” Deighton who, in 1867, founded a tavern near the south shore of Burrard Inlet. Businesses and other settlers followed and, in time, the community grew and became the city of Vancouver.
Today, there are many remaining buildings from the 1886 to 1914 period where Victorian and Edwardian commercial architecture was the most prominent. The district is an award-winning leader when it comes to urban preservation and renewal. The brick warehouses dating from when the district was Vancouver’s commercial and shipping hub now house designer lofts and live/work studios that give the neighbourhood its character.
This twelve-block area is now known as Vancouver’s design district, full of independent shops that offer everything from modern home furnishings and unique gifts to souvenir shops. The neighbourhood is also home to some of the country’s most art. The restored brick and timber buildings are home to an eclectic mix of some of the best restaurants and eateries in the city. There is a wide range of option to suit everyone’s tastes.
As it is in the heart of a very urban area, there are no large green spaces in Gastown. But for those that seek to enjoy nature, there are several parks in the surrounding areas, such as the CRAB Park at Portside, the Andy Livingstone Park in Chinatown, and the Seawall and David Lam, Creekside and Coopers’ Parks in Yaletown.
Crosstown
Crosstown is located south of Gastown, north of Main/Hastings, east of downtown, and west of Strathcona. This places Crosstown in the middle of the oldest and most cultural areas of the city.
This area is Vancouver’s newest community and has a large number of relatively new condos mixed with high-end heritage building loft conversions dating back to the early 1900s in Beatty Street, the heart of the neighbourhood. Crosstown is a compact, high density district, and one of the fastest growing areas of downtown due to an influx of investments and businesses.
Crosstown provides easy access to all the major amenities of Downtown Vancouver. Even so, there are many amenities within the limits of the neighbourhood itself, such as a mall and movie theatre, a supermarket, drug stores, and chain and fast-food restaurants.
The character and cultural diversity of the neighbourhood also attracts other kind of businesses, such as boutique coffee shops, bakeries, clothing and furniture shops, art studios, outdoor markets and many more retail. The bustling atmosphere brings many tourists and Vancouver residents alike to enjoy the area.
There are also some parks for those who enjoy nature and walking or exercising in green areas. Transport to and from Crosstown is fairly easy, there is easy access to the Skytrain and Seabus. Getting around driving might be inconvenient due to the limited parking options, as is usually the case in big cosmopolitan cities. Still, there are a number of parking garages that can do the trick with a little patience.
