Hastings-Sunrise is a large neighborhood stretching from East Broadway in the south all the way to the waters of Burrard Inlet in the north and it borders the city of Burnaby to the east at Boundary Road. It is mostly a multi-cultural, residential neighborhood attracting many working class individuals and young professionals. This neighborhood is also home to the Pacific National Exhibition at Hastings Park.
Hastings Park and the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) epitomize the spirit and history of Vancouver. The fair started in 1910 as an industrial fair to showcase the best of the region’s agriculture and economy. Over the years it has only grown in popularity and has served as a launching pad for many a business that exhibited there as the annual 15-day Summer Fair draws over 900 000 people. Other than the Summer Fair Hastings Park is home to Playland at the PNE and provides the perfect opportunity for outings with family and friends from May to September. The park also hosts various other events and concerts throughout the year like the winter farmer’s market and various musical concerts. A Master Plan to ensure the future of Hastings Park and the PNE has been accepted. The Plan includes improving the park’s connection to the nearby waterfront and other green spaces as well as renewing the annual fair and playground. This Plan will take up to twenty years to complete and require substantial funding but in a city that is more and more environmentally conscious it will make the park ‘greener’ and ensure its economic viability and long-term sustainability.
As with many of the surrounding neighborhoods Hastings-Sunrise is rich in its ethnic diversity with many residents having an Italian heritage or recently immigrating from China and other South-East Asian countries. Residents and visitors can find wonderful Italian delis, grocery stores and Asian supermarkets in the area. There is a nice selection of restaurants or cafes to visit in East Hastings Street as well as others scattered around the neighborhood. Should you want to have more options getting to and from places like Downtown Vancouver or Commercial street is fairly easy with the major roadway (East Hastings Street) running through the northern half of the neighborhood and a number of bus lines accessible from it.
The listings available in Hastings-Sunrise are not many at all but potential buyers do have some options of fairly large condos and townhouses. With some preliminary plans for new developments in the works this might change in the near future.
Hastings-Sunrise is a wonderfully residential neighborhood where residents can often find someone they know when they pop in at a local grocer and visitors can enjoy the tranquility with the massive attraction of the PNE just a stone’s throw away.
