On the southern edge of Vancouver and directly across from the Vancouver International Airport is the neighborhood of Marpole. Marpole is mostly a residential area and as such it is a quiet neighborhood despite its relatively large size. Due to its proximity to the airport it is also the gateway to the rest of the city and as a result many of the public transport lines run through Marpole making public transport very accessible.
Because of Marpole’s location it is a fairly inexpensive neighborhood and there is a good mix of retail stores and restaurants. While Marpole has several big commercial streets some of the best shopping can be found along the Greenville corridor. Many of the stores are smaller but residents and visitors also have some chain stores to choose from. Should you want to get into the hubbub of the centre for some more varied shopping and entertainment options, public transport makes it easy.
Marpole is a richly historic neighborhood and holds the title as one of Vancouver’s oldest. The Marpole Midden for example was once a Musqueam village and burial site of the Coast Salish People some 4000 years ago. There are various parks scattered throughout the neighborhood and the community is dedicated to keeping these up to date.
A completed 2019-2020 Community Plan will ensure Marpole keeps up with the times and provides residents with all they need. Changes and upgrades include a 10-acre waterfront park and better cycling and walking routes to improve connections within the community as well as investment into the shopping areas and business districts. This is all part of the Plan’s Public Benefits Strategy to make areas like Lower Hudson and Greenville more pedestrian friendly while retaining the original characters of these areas as well as making new housing types in areas around Oak street. The community will also benefit with the renewal of the Community Centre, the library, the Marpole Neighborhood House and the Marpole Oakridge Family Place.
Marpole has a reasonable number of listings of both condos and townhouses. Buyers can choose from comfortable 480 sf condos to beautifully modern 2000 sf townhouses. With numerous new developments ranging from planned to recently completed there is also a great mix of modern high- and low-rise buildings.
Marpole is the perfect place to experience the tranquility of suburbia while also having the centre of Vancouver, as well as Richmond just across the river, close enough to be able to enjoy their hustle and bustle.
