Renfrew Heights is a middle class community on the east side of Vancouver, conveniently near the Burnaby border. It has East Broadway to the north, 29th Avenue on the south, Boundary Road to the east, and Nanaimo Street to the west.
It is a pleasant community of mainly residential homes. Since the construction of two SkyTrain train lines that run through the neighbourhood in the 1980s, this area has seen an influx of families from many ethnic backgrounds that moved to this area in search of more affordable housing. Renfrew Heights is a mixture of older and some newer single-family homes, with a smaller quantity of condos and apartments. It is a predominantly residential sector with many instances of Mid Century Venerable design and the Vancouver Special, which are bigger than the older houses. Today, more people than ever choose this neighbourhood, as affordable properties in the city are now more sought after. There can even be some great mountain views in the higher level patios and windows and that can add to the attraction of this area.
Many of the original homes from the Renfrew Heights Housing Project for War Veterans are at the corner of Dieppe and Normandy Drive. During the 1940s, the side of a hill in the neighbourhood was cleared to make the first of lots of identical bungalows built for the returning troops of WWII.
Additionally, Sunny Hill Health Centre on Slocan, provides specialized development and rehabilitation services for children, youth, and their families as part of BC Children’s Hospital.
For those who love the outdoors, there are several parks in the neighbourhood: the Renfrew Ravine Park and the Renfrew Community Park are the main green spaces. Other parks such as Falaise and Beaconsfield Park also feature walking or jogging trails and playgrounds. The Still Creek, the longest of the few creeks that remain in the city that are visible, runs through Renfrew Ravine and Renfrew Community Park. For other entertainment, the Renfrew Park Community Centre is home to a computer lab, a swimming pool, a games room, multi-purpose rooms, a fitness centre, whirlpool, sauna, and a new library.
The shopping hub for residents of this area is at Grandview Highway to the north, which features stores like Canadian Tire, a Real Canadian Superstore, Walmart, and Save-on Foods. To the south, there is Kingsway, which featured a London Drugs and a Safeway. There are also a variety of restaurants to be found along the Grandview Hallway corridor, with Vietnamese pho, Chinese food or the classic burger and onion rings option.
Renfrew Heights has great accessibility. There is easy access to the29th Avenue SkyTrain Station, located on a right-of-way that was used by the historical British Columbia Electric Railway. There are other transport options, like the Translink Bus Service along 29th Avenue. For those who choose to drive, the Grandview Highway connects drivers to Highway 1, which has easy access to Burnaby, Coquitlam and Surrey.
