Heritage meets modern is the perfect way to describe the historic distinct of Yaletown in Vancouver, British Columbia. As a great escape from the big city, Yaletown provides the serenity of an oceanfront seawall, together with a large selection of patios and boutiques.
Yaletown was once the Western terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. As such, the area emerged with warehouses, trucks and transfer companies, and small manufacturers as primary tenants. The area became run down and shoddy after the real-estate boost in the 20th Century, It was brought by the city and transformed for the 1986 World’s Fair. In the later years of the 70s and 80s, urban professionals took notice of the warehouses’ convenient location near downtown. They began restorations and nightclubs, retail stores, and restaurants became tenants.
The City of Vancouver recognized the potential of the district and rezoned the area. The objective was to create a contemporary and compatible mix of industrial, residential, and commercial usage. There is almost no original surviving housing from the 19th century, but many old industrial buildings are still standing. A big quantity of loft-style conversions, together with new constructions, have increased the residential opportunities of this area significantly.
Yaletown has one of the best transportation systems out of all of Vancouver. Many people choose not to own a car because of its great accessibility. There are even some condo buildings that offer the choice of purchasing shares in a “common car” that can be used by residents. There are water taxis to the south side of False Creek and Greenville Island, and the skytrain (for travel to the suburbs) and Canada Line (for travel to the business district downtown, Cambie Corridor, City of Richmond and Vancouver International Airport) are within walking distance. Thus, all of Vancouver is within easy reach for Yaletown residents and is perfect for those who need to commute for work.
With regards to recreation, there are many parks surrounding the False Creek basin, including Cooper’s Park, Creekside Park, and David Lam Park. David Lam Park has an impressive amount of green space. It is also an amazing place for children with two big play areas. The waterfront parks are idea for walking, jogging, biking or inline skating along the Seawall. The Roundhouse Community Centre was founded where there an old Canadian Pacific roundhouse stood, at the intersection of Pacific Boulevard and Davie Street.
Yaletown is the newest shopping area of the city. The neighbourhood is characterized by turn-of-the-century buildings that have become high-end retailers. There are also dry cleaners, grocery stores, fashion shops, produce delis, restaurants, and theaters.
Yaletown is a successful bled of high-rise and low-rise, townhouse and condo, state-of-the-art facilities with breathtaking views and green space. The result is a walkable, confortable, liveable community. The converted warehouses that house many chic and retail businesses —such as high-end furniture stores, home designer and designer clothing retailers—,as well as the picturesque Seawall and many green spaces and parks are part of what make the Yaletown district one of the most coveted areas to live in the city of Vancouver.
